Food is the New Rock

If you're already on the ledge this holiday season you'll probably want to stop reading now, because the Food is the New Rock podcast is taking the rest of 2012 off. You'll still have our website (foodisthenewrock.com), Twitter account (@foodisnewrock), Facebook and old episodes to keep you warm and cozy through the end of the year, but there won't be any new podcasts until January.  As a send off to 2013 Zach and Chuck reminisce over their favorite episodes  of 2012 and thank everybody for supporting the show through our first 26 episodes.  Thanks to everybody for listening, and we'll see you in 2013!

Ep. 25 - Ed and Brian Reyes from the L.A. band The Little Ones stop by Bronson Island to talk food w/ Zach & Chuck, and bring along their longtime producer David Newton from the Mighty Lemon Drops.  The two brothers are Filipino so a significant portion of the podcast is spent talking about crispy pig and Filipino breakfast, but we also talk balti, mushy peas, chip butties and English football to make Dave feel at home.  The Little Ones new album "The Dawn Sang Along", featuring the single "Argonauts" comes out Feb. 12th.

Ep. 24 - Doug and Bryan from New York's Big Gay Ice Cream Truck stop by Bronson Island to talk music and more with Zach & Chuck.  They talk hate mail, the Mister Softee mafia, Doug's time and Julliard, and how Elite Yelpers tried to shake them down for "something special". Plus, there's mention of Marky Ramone's ear hair, and a the story of how calling Jane Wiedlin from the Go Go's a bitch lead to her writing their theme song.

Ep. 23 - Singer/Songwriter Michelle Branch stops by Bronson Island to talk to Zach and Chuck P about  "Cook, Taste, Eat" her new online cooking show w/ SF Chef Michael Mina. In honor of Thanksgiving we talk turkey carving, pies, and how competitive she is with her Mom and sister (sounds like things get ugly around this time of year.) We also talk Indonesian food, shit on a shingle, and about the time her 7 year old daughter ate pig heart.  Plus she does two songs live at the end of the episode, including a cover of "Sweet & Sour" by Band of Skulls because we bonded over Chinese food buffets.

Ep. 22 - Mexican food ambassador, and James Beard award winning Chef Rick Bayless takes time from running his Chicago restaurant empire to talk food and music with Chuck & Zach. We get him to talk about making mix tapes, food as art, and the similarities between chefs and musicians. Plus he talks about his brother Skip (the sports reporter), President Obama's victory, and about the time Jimmy Buffet came into one of his restaurants and didn't order a margarita. Recently he was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle by the Mexican Government, and his new cookbook "Frontera: Margaritas, Guacamole & Snacks" is in stores now.

Ulises Bella and Wil-Dog Abers from legendary L.A. band Ozomatli join Zach and Chuck at Bronson Island studios to talk food and travel.  They tell us about growing up in L.A. and how it prepared them to tour around the world eating: from Thailand to China to Vietnam to India and more.  Thai Elvis and tiger cock are also mentioned, and we hear about the time Chef Jose Andres sliced and passed out jamon iberico from the stage during one of their shows.

Ep. 20 - Iron Chef Jose Garces invites Chuck and Zach into his hotel room to talk about music and his new cookbook "The Latin Road Home", plus how he feels about calling food a form of art.  There's also talk of El Vez (The Mexican Elvis!), and Jose attempts to explain away the Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift on his iPod by blaming it on his kids.

Ep. 19 - Dapwell and Kool A.D. from the hip hop group Das Racist join Zach on the show this week to talk about dosa, Chinese buffets, and DMT. Plus we ask them about their breakout song "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" and about their appearance in Dosa Hunt, a film by Amrit Singh (from Stereogum). And there's even a rant about Primanti Bros. They also brought along their friends SAFE and Lakutis (aka Lex) to join in on the fun. Thanks to last week's podcast guest Kris Yenbamroong for letting us record the show at Night + Market, his West Hollywood Thai restaurant that's just a few blocks away from the Roxy.

Ep. 18 - L.A. Chef Kris Yenbamroong wasn't an obvious choice to be on the podcast, but we're big fans. Not only is he chef at one of the baddest Thai Restaurants in the country (Night + Market), but he's cooked for LCD Soundsytem, used to work for Photographer Richard Kern (where he got to work on a Thurston Moore project), and has been in Disneyland jail. How could we not?
